Synopsis

26 years since it was first seen on cinema screens it is now time to revisit the classic story Strictly Ballroom as Baz Lurhmann’s breakout film finds a new home in London’s West End.

Drew McOnie calls the shots on this musical production, which takes its cues from the film of the same name and provides the highs and lows of a heartwarming and memorable story, featuring compelling characters and unforgettable songs.

Though it was originally conceived for the stage, Strictly Ballroom made a big mark on screens back in 1992 and it would be many years before this musical version emerged Down Under, landing at venues across Australia from 2014 before making it to the UK in 2016. So now it is a film-turned-stage musical that joins the like of The Lion King, Billy Elliot and School Of Rock, which have also enjoyed great success in Theatreland.

So as the story is retold in 2018 at the Piccadilly Theatre audiences are in for a treat, with McOnie presenting a show that focuses on the character of Scott, a ballroom dancer with big ambitions. However, his method of achieving his goals put him at odds with his peers as he take on an unusual style of dancing as he tries to win a competition and find love.

The musical score also includes some timeless and familiar songs from decades-gone-by. It makes this one of the unmissable theatre productions of the year.

So make sure you catch Strictly Ballroom as Baz Lurhmann’s classic story gets a new lease of life in London’s West End when it runs at the Piccadilly Theatre from 2018.
