When “Matilda the Musical” opened at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon as the latest flagship production of the Royal Shakespeare Company it already had a lot going for it. Not only was it based on the hit novel from Roald Dahl, it was also boasting the direction of acclaimed helmer Matthew Warchus, plus music from one of the best known names in the comedy world at the moment – Tim Minchin. But even with all of these factors in place, no-one could have guessed that it would earn such high praise and become popular enough to attract the attention of West End and Broadway producers.
But all of this happened and now London theatre audiences will get the chance to witness this acclaimed show at the West End’s Cambridge Theatre from October 2011, replacing the long-running “Chicago” and providing a stand-out production for anyone lucky enough to get hold of theatre tickets.
“Matilda the Musical” follows the plot of Roald Dahl’s book and focuses on Matilda, a girl with extraordinary intellect who uses her brain power to teach lessons to those doing bad things. She also manages to read the entire collection of books in the local library and as a result she is miles ahead of anyone else her age (or older for that matter!). Then when she arrives at school she is blessed with supernatural powers, which allow her to continue to teach lessons to those that deserve it.
London theatre audiences have already relished in the show at the Courtyard Theatre and now they get another chance to do so as it runs at the Cambridge Theatre from Tuesday 22nd November 2011 (with previews from Tuesday 18th October 2011).
