Synopsis

It’s almost a decade since cinema screens across the world were graced with the movie Legally Blonde as Reece Witherspoon’s Elle Woods heads out to Law School to make something of herself and prove her ex boyfriend wrong in the process. The movie was nominated for Golden Globes and won critical acclaim, making top 100 lists for the funniest movies. Its success and its message of being true to yourself would eventually make for a perfect stage musical adaptation.

Reece Witherspoon, Matthew Davis and Luke Wilson are all replaced by Sheridan Smith, Duncan James and Alex Gaumond for the West End stage production at the Savoy Theatre. They are all familiar faces for audiences in the UK, with Smith appearing in the sitcom “Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps” whilst James is famous for being one part of the boy band Blue.

When the story begins, Elle Woods is dating Warner Huntington II, a law student who has invited her out to dinner one night in a situation that looks like a wedding proposal. When Elle arrives she is devastated to learn that Warner is in fact dumping her, claiming that he needs someone a little more serious. But Elle has never been one to take things sitting down and instead of letting the situation hold her back she emerges from her bedroom triumphant and decides to change her ways. Everything that made her less-than-serious is pushed aside, including credit cards, and she sets her sights on making something of herself – by enrolling at Harvard Law School. Legally Blonde is a story about believing in yourself, following your dreams and finding happiness.

Sheridan Smith, best known for playing Janet in the BBC sitcom “Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps”, has also appeared in range of shows such as “Grown Ups”, “The Royle Family”, “Love Soup” and “Benidorm”, meaning she has worked with the likes of Johnny Vegas, Ralf Little and Caroline Aherne. For the stage she has appeared in “A Little Shop of Horrors” at the Duke of York’s Theatre, “Bugsy Malone” at the Queen’s Theatre and “Into the Woods” at the Donmar Warehouse.

Duncan James, meanwhile, has appeared in various media over the years, beginning with his stint in Blue and progressing to television shows and West End musicals. After leaving Blue he has appeared on the celebrity ice skating competition “Dancing on Ice” and portrayed Billy Flynn in “Chicago” at the Cambridge Theatre.

But they are not the only stars of the show and Legally Blonde also features Alex Gaumond. The Canadian performer takes on Luke Wilson’s role of Emmet Richmond having previously appeared in “Desperately Seeking Susan” at the Novello Theatre and “The Full Monty” at the Prince of Wales Theatre.

Legally Blonde makes the transition from the silver screen to the West End stage, at the Savoy Theatre from Tuesday 12th January 2010 and currently booking to October 2011.
