Synopsis

Great musicals are good at taking an audience back to a particular era of musical history, whether it is the 1950s era of “Grease” or the Roaring 1920s of “Chicago”. It is part of their everlasting appeal, providing audiences with a memorable means of escapism from the everyday world. So whether you want to head back to the 1960s era of “Dirty Dancing” or the futuristic setting of “We Will Rock You”, musicals are unbeatable stage experiences.

When arriving at the Playhouse Theatre in 2010, it is the swinging 1960s that audiences will be transported to with Laurence Marks’ and Maurice Gran’s “Dreamboats & Petticoats”, which lands on the stage following a successful run at the Savoy Theatre in 2009. It is a rock’n’roll adventure that combines a heart warming and uplifting story with the rocking music of the era, all accumulated from the hit 2007 album of the same name. As a result, audiences can enjoy the songs of The Shadows to Eddie Cochran and everything in between.

The setting for “Dreamboats & Petticoats” is 1961, where we meet two young musicians who embody everything the musical era had to offer. It was a time when teenage rebellion was embraced on every street corner and rock’n’roll was their music of choice, but with Norman and Bobby, their focus is on the ladies. Together, they argue and compete to win the hearts of their adoring fans but it is one girl in particular that has had a profound effect on them – the gorgeous Laura, an irresistible girl who is capable of turning the head of any man around her. But far from simply being a pretty face, Laura is also a dab hand at the guitar and it is her talent that could propel them to rock stardom.

The music of the show not only comes from The Shadows and Eddie Cochran, but also artists such as Ray Orbison, Billy Fury and Chuck Berry, plus many of the other stars that feature on the 2007 release. As a result, expect songs such as “Happy Birthday Sweet 16”, “Three Steps To Heaven”, “To Know Him is to Love Him” and many more. With favourites from the 1950s and 1960s it is a show that will provide a treat for anyone with a taste for music.

And the whole thing has been penned by two writers well known for putting a smile on people’s faces – Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran. These two sitcom writers are responsible for many favourite shows such as “Birds of a Feather”, “Goodnight Sweetheart”, “The New Statesman” and “Shine on Harvey Moon”. As a result, audiences can expect a show that leaves a lasting impression.

Dreamboats & Petticoats is at the Playhouse Theatre in London.
