Synopsis

Few films these days can really be said to have caused a sensation, but with the arrival of the grumpy, ill tempered ogre Shrek onto our screens, the world knew it was in the grip of something that would not let go.  The story of Shrek blends humour and wit with pathos and charm, making it immediately successful and appealing to all ages.  It is at a touching tale of discovering who you are, and that it is what’s on the inside that counts.  The film has been converted for the stage, and is now touring the world in the new incarnation that is Shrek The Musical.  The stage show promises to be as much of a phenomenon as it’s parent film.

The story tells of a horrible ogre, Shrek, who has no time for anyone but himself.  However, when the evil Lord Farquaad evicts all fairytale creatures from his realm, they are forced to seek refuge in Shrek’s swamp.  Shrek, of course, is none to happy about this, and sets out on a quest to regain his peace and quiet.  However, he gets much more than he bargained for, and on this journey of discovery he may come back quite a changed ogre…

The film’s charming story has been fleshed out and buffed up with a selection of thrilling musical numbers that really bring out the magic of the tale.  It features such songs as ‘Big Bright Beautiful World’, ‘Story of My Life’, ‘The Goodbye Song’, ‘Don’t Let Me Go’, ‘What’s Up, Duloc?’, ‘I Know It’s Today’, ‘Travel Song’, ‘Forever’, ‘This Is How A Dream Comes True’, ‘Who I’d Be’, ‘Morning Person’, ‘I Think You Got A Beat’, ‘The Ballad of Farquaad’, ‘Make a Move’, ‘When Words Fail’, ‘Build A Wall’, ‘Freak Flag’, ‘This is Out Story’, a brand new song ‘Forever’, and the show stopping finale of The Monkee’s classic track ‘I’m A Believer’.

Opening on the 6th of May at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, this production looks set to raise the bar for this piece’s performance higher than ever before.  Jason Moore directs an all star cast that includes Britain’s Got Talent’s very own Amanda Holden in the part of Princess Fiona, Nigel Lindsay as the grotty ogre Shrek, Richard Blackwood as the loudmouthed Donkey, and Nigel Harman as Lord Farquaad.  With a book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, and music by Jeanine Tesori, this production promises to be really something.
