We Will Rock You
Dominion Theatre
Synopsis
This musical is one of the most imaginative shows in the West End based on one of the most famous and popular bands of all time – Queen. Since 2002 when it opened at the Dominion Theatre, We Will Rock You has attracted record numbers of people, all eager to witness the unique plot that finds a place for many of Queen’s classic songs, with characters and groups that are also sourced from the lyrics and themes of their back catalogue.
A true blockbuster, We Will Rock You comes from the pen of comedian and author Ben Elton, who has put together a futuristic tale of dystopia and struggle against an oppressive system. It was first conceptualised in the mid 1990s when Jim Beach, the manager of Queen, thought that a West End musical was a good idea. However, it would be some time before the musical would make it to the stage, with 2000 seeing Ben Elton join the project alongside collaborations with Brian May and Roger Taylor and by 2002 the show has found its home – and its audience.
Rather than chronicle the life of Queen, We Will Rock You transports us 300 years into the future to a time in which globalisation is complete and the Earth is now known as Planet Mall, with an oppressive leadership held by the Globalsoft Corporation. At the top of this tyrannical ladder of power is the evil Killer Queen, who rules under strict authoritarian discipline – musical expression is banned; individual freedom is banned and every citizen must think, dress and act exactly the same. Failure to comply with these rules will lead to the inevitable brainwashing until conformity is settled.
But not everyone is ready to go along with all of this and a group of freedom fighters known as The Bohemians are ready to free the world from this regime and return music to the streets. Amongst them are Galileo and Scaramouche, who wish to return the world to the Golden Age, or the ‘Rhapsody’. Watching out for the Ga Ga cops and attempting to find a guitar known as the ‘mighty axe of the Hairy One’, they set out to take down Killer Queen once and for all.
With choreography provided by Arlene Phillips, We Will Rock You also includes song and dance numbers that bring the magic of Queen to the stage. Musical numbers include Don’t Stop Me Now, Another One Bites The Dust, I Want To Break Free, Bohemian Rhapsody, A Kind Of Magic, Hammer To Fall, Who Wants To Live Forever, Radio Ga Ga, Under Pressure, Play The Game and of course We Will Rock You.
We Will Rock You continues at the Dominion Theatre where it is booking late into 2011 with extensions beyond this date likely.
