Synopsis

When it comes to West End musicals, there is nothing to beat “Billy Elliot: The Musical”, which is the hit stage adaptation of the 2000 movie. It allows audiences to take a trip back in time to the 1980s, where political unease was rife within the mining communities of the North as working class struggle gripped the nation. In this setting we follow the dreams of a young boy who just wants to dance his way to the top.

Hope, triumph over adversity, bravery and standing up for what you believe in. These are all themes from this blockbusting musical, which has fans in countries all around the world and continues to draw in big numbers to the Victoria Palace Theatre in London.

The show appears under the direction of Stephen Daldry with Lee Hall, the writer of the original movie, lending his hand to pen the show’s book and lyrics as well as Peter Darling as choreographer.

The story of “Billy Elliot: The Musical” takes audiences to a mining town in the North East of England. It is here that Margaret Thatcher’s plans to close the pits have been met with anger and despair. As a result, a power struggle rages through the community as the miners’ strike takes its hold. Billy is from a family of miner’s, with his father and brothers all taking part in the strike action, but unlike his relatives he wants nothing to do with it all and instead has found his true calling as a ballet dancer.

Billy’s father had always wanted him to become a boxer and follow in his own footsteps as well as his grandfather’s, so he is reluctant to tell his family of his new ambitions at first – fearing their reaction. But with time he realises that they are there for him and they help him to realise his dream and try out at the Royal Ballet School.

This musical version of the classic story features songs like “The Stars Look Dow”, “Expressing Yourself”, “Born to Boogie”, “Angry Dance”, “Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher”, “Deep Into the Ground” and “Electricity”.

The music for these songs have been provided by musical legend Sir Elton John, who gave a helping hand to the production and made it truly stand up on its own two feet. As a result, whether you are familiar with the original “Billy Elliot” or not, this show will have something to offer.

This much has been proven by its enormous popularity that has carried it since its opening in 2005. Since that date it has picked up rave reviews and a number of Laurence Olivier Awards, plus additional nominations as well. It has been enjoyed all around the world and is showing no signs of slowing down.

It is currently booking at its home of the Victoria Palace Theatre.
