Synopsis

Death is the inescapable fact of life that humanity has tried to understand and come to terms with over millions of years.  Each epoch has it’s own way of coming to terms with the fact that one day, for the individual, everything is going to end.  There is something in the human consciousness that has great difficulty resolving itself to it’s own destruction.  Of recent years, mysticism and new age philosophies have filled the gap left by the dwindling of the larger religions, and belief in ghosts and the supernatural is widespread.

Perhaps it is for this reason that stories like Ghost – The Musical are so eagerly awaited and looked forward to.  By dramatising the afterlife and the act of death, it seems easier to come to terms with.  But such ideas aside, Ghost – The Musical is essentially a beautiful love story that will appeal to anyone because of the romantic ideals that it adheres to.  This is a story of a love too strong to leave this world, and as such proves for an extremely affecting and involving theatre experience.   This is a musical that has it all, with great tunes and an beautiful story played out by a stellar cast.  This much anticipated musical is proving that it was certainly worth the wait.

The show is based on the film from 1990, which starred such greats as Patrick Swayze, Demi Moor and Whoopie Goldberg.  This was a hit movie that stunned audiences and critics with it’s fresh approach to the romantic drama.  One of the most lucrative films in the UK of all time, it continues to win audiences with it’s tale of otherworldly love.  Granted an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, the story has lost none of it’s charm in being adapted for the stage.  With a book and lyrics by Bruce Joel Rubin, the film’s original screenwriter, and music by Dave Stewart, of Eurythmics’ fame, and Glen Ballard, the man behind Alanis Morissette’s era defining album ‘Jagged Little Pill’, this musical has all the hallmarks of lasting success.

The story revolves around the afterlife of Sam, who is killed one day on the way home by a violent thug.  Becoming a ghost, he learns that his partner, Molly, is in sincere danger.  With the help of a bogus medium, Oda Mae Brown, he sets out on a quest to help and protect her, at whatever cost.
