Caroline, or Change

The Playhouse Theatre is regularly the home of important works, whether it is 2018’s Gore Vidal revival The Best Man or previous shows like Headlong’s 1984. In 2018 this tradition continues with the revival of Tony Kushner’s Caroline, Or Change.

The writer’s semi-autobiographical work has amassed a large fanbase since it was first seen on Broadway at the beginning of the century, which led to awards-season success in London when it ran at the National Theatre. So its return in 2018 will ensure a large audience headed to Theatreland.

Kushner was no stranger to success when Caroline, Or Change first appeared, of course, having previously provided scripts to plays like Angels In America and A Bright Room Called Day (in addition to high profile films). However, Caroline, Or Change diverted from his usual plays and landed as a top new musical.

When it runs at the Playhouse Theatre it brings Sharon D Clarke with it. The acclaimed performer has played the title role since it was first staged at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2017 and continues to earn well-deserved praise for her portrayal of the African American maid at the centre of the narrative.

That narrative takes theatregoers to 1960s Louisiana, where Caroline strives to support her family (she is the single mother of four children) by working as a maid for the Gellman family. She strikes a bond with the eight-year-old Noah, who is struggling to come to terms with his mother’s death and his father’s subsequent remarriage, and soon faces a moral and legal financial quandary.

The production is directed in the West End by Michael Longhurst and runs at the Playhouse Theatre from late 2018.
